bbstomp November 2009

News from the Conventions, 2008, 2009 and 2010!

As we now move on from the events of the 3rd October 2009 and what was another very successful Convention, even if ticket sales did not match our expectations. The last two years have seen a couple of very impressive names at the top of the list, in anticipation of their possible attendance at a Convention. In both cases we failed to pull the idea off and had we been able to then ticket sales, could have been considerably more. This said there will be those who know enough about the story and its many aspects to be aware in a number of cases. It is perhaps those slightly out of centre who perhaps have the most interesting stories to tell. So the two years we have now had at The Canal Suite of Lakeside have not seen the ticket sales we would have wished. Even so for those of you who have attended have realised the venue is very impressive and has much to offer for the future. More about this later. May I take this opportunity to list again the names read at the end of the event on Saturday the 3rd October, without whom the days events would not have been as successful as they were.
To the very special Wayne Johnson of Los Angeles and who perhaps more than anyone, the Conventions owe so much too! David Leaf, Paul Shakespeare, John Porteous, Mrs, Jean Sievers, Alan Jardine, Trisha Campo, Charlie Brennan, especially 'The Beached Boys' and more especially Alan Carvell. Chris and Pip White who in the absence of Rick de Jongh (for the first time since 1983?).
Especially to James and Julia for their help in clearing up when most others had left. Moreso to James for his help with the set-up on the Friday afternoon and very special thanks here to Lakeside for allowing us this privilege. To recall here James's horror when he found the signed 12" for 'Here Comes The Night' autographed by all except Carl. Needless to say it was the item to be chosen by the first winning ticket drawn out, very kindly by Alan Carvell. A report of the event will follow in the magazine from the very kind Viv Drewett. So enough of 2009 for the moment.

From the event of 2008, if any of you who attended have photographs which were taken with either Barbara or Annie, or both! If you would like then to be signed to you or whatever, with a short message and an S.S.A.E. with a 'Large' postage stamp for their return to you. Please send them to;- Beach Boys Stomp, 23, The Woolmead, East Street, Farnham, Surrey, GU9 7TT.

As those of you who attended the recent thirtyfirst event will know the Auction was cancelled for the second year in a row. So this is now to be carried out on the web-site and will operate as follows;- To participate you must have attended or held a ticket for either the 2008 event or the more recent 2009 Convention. The closing date for bids is the 30th November 2009. Should a bid not reach a required level by the 30th November, then the Auction may be opened up to all Brian Wilson/Beach Boys related web-sites throughout the world. There will be a special e-mail address for this but it may not be included here when this article appears. You may bid via post to the usual Beach Boys Stomp address, printed above. There may be a change with one of the auction items but it will not be one of the significant offerings. Due to this possibility should there be an alteration the item will re-surface at a later date.

Although the 'Special Guest' session caused a number of operational problems, it was very well received by all who took the short walk down to The International Hotel. To such a positive extent, Mr Jack Rieley intimated he may consider attending the event another year? If anyone who attended the day would like to have something signed by Mr Rieley, ideally something small i.e. a cd booklet or similar.
It should be sent to the usual address and include an S.S.A.E. with the 'Large' postage stamp for the return, in due course.

Now to 2010 and a move to another location within the Lakeside complex. The International Hotel have another room which may be hired and overlooks the lake itself. It is much smaller than The Canal Suite and thus more attractively priced. We hope to have secured a Special Guest for the 32nd event by Christmas and this will enable us to make an early announcement for next year. With ticket prices being available at certain prices for certain periods and the initial block could be £15-00 each until the end of July, or until a specific number have been sold. More news nearer the time.

In order to secure one or two highly significant names within the story, we have had to agree to be more flexible than the third Saturday in September. Which was our preferred date for many years. One of those who has agreed to come if at all possible is Mr. Van Dyke Parks. Also we have been in discussion with Daniel and Marilyn about The Honeys. Although we hope this date will be a little less flexible. Also Mr. Dean Torrance is back in the frame on a flexible date arrangement. It is hoped this idea will span the winter holiday season, which as I am sure most of you are aware runs from the 1st of October to the 31st of March, or thereabouts.

The e-mail address for bids in the Auction is;-
bbs-spl@live.co.uk and is exclusive to this Auction.
